The encouraging sleep signal is about trained service dogs specifically — a far bigger commitment than a family pet — and the evidence for pets or therapy-animal visits helping sleep is essentially nonexistent.
Who was studied. Families with (or waitlisted for) a trained service dog — one study compared 39 families who had one with 36 on a waitlist; the other followed 18 children before and after a dog arrived. Families were mostly similar to each other (often White, higher-income), so it's unclear how well this applies to everyone.
